Writing is a wonderful craft that allows us to share thoughts, information and maybe even inspire others in some way. It requires discipline, tenacity, and if we are to practice this craft long-term, self-care. The act of writing often requires long sessions of sitting, most often in front of a computer. Lucky for us, there is an antidote for the potential job hazards a writer may incur. It lies right outside our door. Let’s take a look at three, although there are many more reasons, we may want to stop what we are doing right now, or schedule breaks during our day, to go outside and take a walk. ONE: A walk outdoors can boost our creativity. A study comparing walking in different settings found that walking outdoors has the most beneficial impact on stimulating the free flow of ideas. Do you take a stroll in nature to enhance your writing? I know I do. I always venture outdoors and meander, or power walk around the neighborhood, or in a local park. The ideas that flow into my mind can be almost overwhelming at times. The ideas that I want to hold onto, I dictate into the Voice Memos app on my phone to record them in rough draft. Some, I transcribe later for various writing projects. TWO: Writing is generally a solo journey. Isolation and loneliness can be a side-effect. Walking outdoors often leads to contact with other people, which may present a chance to have a chat, especially if they have a cute puppy with them. THREE: Taking steps in natural surroundings is good for our overall health. According the Center for Disease Control, one in four American adults sits for longer than eight hours every day. Our sedentary habit even has a new name, sitting disease, and has been called the new smoking. The American Heart Foundation outlines the many negative consequences of sitting and ways you can improve breaking the habit of prolonged sitting.

"We sit in the mud...and reach for the stars." - Ivan Turgenev The thrill of spring is upon us. Rivers roar, bursts of green in every shade emerge from the earth, and birdsong plays amongst the trees.
We don't want to miss this energy, and show, just because of a little mud, do we? Throw on some boots and head outside. Go ahead- get a little muddy, splash in a puddle. It can be fun and invigorating. You don't have boots for the mud? Let's take a look at three of my favorite, which are popular amongst other nature lovers as well. Merrell Hiking Boots Sturdy, thick soled, and waterproof, these are my favorite boots to play outside in, especially if there is rocky terrain or hard surfaces. They absorb the shock well. If they get muddy, just let it dry and wipe it off. Lowa Hiking Boots Great ankle support and lightweight so they make walking on trails enjoyable. Go ahead, walk through that muddy section or across the wood bridge covered in water, your feet will stay nice and dry. Wellies Boots Created in the 1800's by the first Duke of Wellington, "wellies" have withstood the test of time. These rubber boots have gone far beyond the United Kingdom. They come in classic, solid colors, or fun patterns. Easy to slip on and hose off. So don't just sit there in the mud, go ahead and walk in it, play in it, under the stars. The Coronavirus Pandemic has made one thing very clear, the healthier we are; the more likely we can fight disease. A study estimated that nearly two-thirds of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. could be attributed to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart failure. Each of these non-communicable diseases contributes to inflammation in the body, which added fuel to the Coronavirus fire. They can be prevented, or potentially reversed for most of us, with a healthy lifestyle.
Eating clean fruits, and vegetables, is an essential part of any healthy diet. The best way to ensure that we have access to pesticide-free, organic produce is to grow it ourselves. I don't have room. I don't know how. I don't have time. These are all legitimate concerns for many of us today. Let's take a look at how we can at least grow some of our own food.
1. Grow Microgreens
Micorgreens are nutrient-dense powerhouse plants. They grow quickly, in a small amount of space, indoors or outdoors. They are tasty, and easy to use on salads, sandwiches or in smoothies. Take a look at this system I trialed. What I like most about this option is that it was easy and didn't make a mess. Maybe it will work for you.
2. Aquaponic Growing
Growing plants in water is a quickly growing trend. These systems are being used on city rooftops, college campuses and homes. Take a look at what is entailed in aquaponic growing. Video What I like most about this option, it offers healthy greens all the time. You can even get an aquaponic garden that also serves as a fishtank!
3. Grow in Hanging Baskets, Containers, or a Small Raised Bed.
If you have access to sun and water, you can grow some food, even if it is just herbs. Check out all the resources on the Healthy Green Thumbs™ page. You'll find a year- long series of newsletters, videos, tips and resources to help you grow plants, including many produce options, so you can enhance your health and well-being. The shopping page on The Nature Nurse™, PLLC website includes some items that may help you as well. SHOP NOW Change occurs one bite at a time. Spring is a time of renewal, so why not try something new and grow some of your own food? Your body will thank you. A new year is upon us. Many of us will use this change in the calendar year as a fresh start to improve our health and well-being. If you are looking for support to achieve a weight loss goal, a more enlightened spirit or to add more joy into your life, then you will want to include nature in your healthy lifestyle toolbox. I have asked my friend, Diane, to share how nature has enhanced her wellness. Diane has lost over 190 pounds, and kept it off, for several years. This is her story. Outdoors is my go to for relief. Fresh air clears my head of the “clutter” from all the blather on TV. It wasn’t always that way. 190 pounds ago, my “joy” was a stack of cookbooks, bag of tortilla chips, cookies and a LazyBoy with the TV on. Oh, I loved the crunch of those chips, and had, for too many yrs. I was soothed by food for 55 years and it was taking a “heavy” toll on me physically, and emotionally. I withdrew because I couldn’t keep up. That began to change after I rejoined WW. It was sooo gradual, I didn’t even notice it until I looked back. I met wonderful people. We would walk a bit after our WW meeting. Sometimes just in the parking lot. Later as my confidence, and strength grew, we met at different parks. The beautiful scenery, the warm humid air of North Carolina became “gifts” as we walked more and more. One day, alone on an awesome gravel road, I heard from the crunch under my shoes. It gave me soooo much more “joy” than any bag of chips ever could. The sound, the smells and,oh, those awesome endorphins surging, what a reward. It’s out there just the other side of the door...it’s free for ALL...and away from those same four walls!!! I’ll see you outside Living a healthy lifestyle can be as simple as taking that first step. Step outside and let nature invite you to explore all her wonder. Want to learn more about how nature can enhance your health, well-being and add more joy into your life?
